Alfred John Wisbeach was born in Swaffham Bulbeck (Newmarket Q3-1891 3B;504) son of Henry and Jane WISBEACH (née BUTLER).
1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Coach Road, Swaffham Prior with his father Henry WISBEACH [54], domestic coachman; his mother Jane [50]; brothers Frederick [17] yardman on farm, Frank [15] farm labourer and Arthur [14] grocer's errand boy. All were born in Swaffham Bulbeck. 1911 census... Aged 20, a domestic groom, he was lodging with Harold and Mrs DAWE in Llanvihangel Crucorney, Abergavenny. He is recorded as born in Swaffham Prior. His parents were at The Lodge, Swaffham Prior, three of their nine children had died. |

The Fifth Battle of Ypres (28th September -2nd October 1918). On 28th September 1918 the Allied Army Group of Flanders, comprising British, French and Belgian divisions under the command of King Albert I of Belgium, attacked and broke through the German Front to the north, east and south of the city of Ypres. Casualties were over 4,500 for both the British and the Belgian forces. The progress of the advance was significant, with the recapture of the Kemmelberg and several miles of territory lost to the German advance in April earlier that year. The 2nd Hampshires had 23 killed on 2nd October 1918
